Top 50 Players of the EFL – 40th: Adebayo Akinfenwa (Wycombe Wanderers)

Wycombe Wanderers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has been voted by you as the 40th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Akinfenwa is the 40th best player in the Football League. This is the first time that he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

Akinfenwa has always been a cult favourite among football fans no matter where he is playing. And if we’re honest, that’s because of his size and physique. He just looks so different to any other footballer and it seems like he should be playing the type of football that’s popular over the pond than ‘soccer’. But if you just think about Akinfenwa for his size, you are ignoring the talented footballer he actually is.

That’s because Akinfenwa was one of the best players on the pitch for Wycombe this season as they got promoted from Sky Bet League Two this season. In the 46 appearances he made this season for the Chairboys, he scored 18 goals. That’s a tally that most strikers would be proud of, never mind one that’s so focused on by the opposition and one that’s heading towards the end of his career now that he is 36-years-old. Grimsby Town were one of the teams he punished with his goalscoring ability after netting twice in an early season game against them.

Akinfenwa will now hope to continue that form in Sky Bet League One.
