Liverpool and Arsenal to join Wolves in race for Saints keeper

Sky Bet Championship champions Wolverhampton Wanderers will need to fend off a battle from English Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Arsenal to sign highly-rated Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy according to the Mirror.

The 28-year-old Guildford born stopper has pushed fellow goalkeeper Fraser Forster to the limit for the number one jersey at St Mary’s Stadium this season and could opt to leave Southampton for more regular first team football should he not be guaranteed a place in the side next season.

The72 recently reported that Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen to sign McCarthy ahead of their return to the English Premier League in 2018/2019, however, it is now believed that both Liverpool and Arsenal are tracking the former England Under-21 international and could provide significant competition for his services.

McCarthy started his career with Reading where he made 75 appearances in all competitions. The player was also loaned out by The Royals on no less than eight occasions as he gained vital first team playing experience in the early days of his career.

Moves to Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace followed before McCarthy joined current club Southampton for an undisclosed fee in summer 2016. The keeper made just two outings for The Saints last season but has featured on 22 occasions this term.

McCarthy has just one year remaining on his current deal and may be ready to consider all of his career options with the number one jersey far from assured at his current club.
