Millwall defender looking forward to new season

Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo has claimed that the squad are ecstatic with the season they have had in the Sky Bet Championship, but that they are looking forward to an even bigger challenge in the 2018/19 campaign.

It was Millwall’s first season back in the Sky Bet Championship, after earning promotion via the Play-Offs in 2016/17, and the London side finished eighth in the table, only narrowly missing out on the top six.

Their performances came as a huge surprise to everyone, with the majority of pundits predicting that they would struggle.

But Romeo said that the squad were thrilled to prove doubters wrong. Speaking to the club’s official website, the right back said: “I think the season has been amazing. A lot of people wrote us off before it had even started. Even in the early part of it, we were still seeing that we were going to struggle. But we’ve proven everyone wrong and credit has to go to the players, the manager and the club as a whole to get in the position we’ve got in.”

“Personally, I knew the step up was going to be another challenge for me, but that’s something I’ve had to deal with throughout my whole career. But I was ready for it, I knew it was coming.”

It will be difficult for Millwall to emulate this season’s successes next time round, but the squad are an optimistic bunch, and there is no way that they will settle for any less than what they achieved this season.

Echoing that point, Romeo said: “I think we’ve got to try and at least match what we’ve done this year and then try to go even further. It’s going to be a bigger challenge, however, because people know what we’re about and what we’re capable of. But everyone is looking forward to it.”

“I’m looking forward to my career going from strength to strength. That’s what I’m expecting and that’s what I’m looking forward to. It’s another challenge and I’m going to enjoy it.”
