QPR set for swift managerial appointment

Former Derby County manager Steve McClaren is set to be appointed the new boss of Queens Park Rangers, according to Graeme Bailey.

Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Ian Holloway on Thursday afternoon.

Holloway departed Loftus Road after eighteen months in charge of the club, a spell which saw him take charge of 80 games. The R’s won just 26 matches during that time.

QPR endured a disappointing campaign in the Championship last season, finishing in 16th place, nineteen points off a play off position.

Owner Tony Fernandes is keen on a quick appointment in order to give the new boss a full pre season to stamp his authority on the club.

According to Bailey, McClaren is set to be appointed by Monday, seeing the 57-year old returning to English football management for the first time since he was sacked by Derby County in  March 2017.

His first job in management came in 2001, at Middlesbrough. He took charge of 233 games at Boro, winning on 87 occasions. During a five-year spell at the Teessiders he guided them to a League Cup triumph and UEFA Cup final.

McClaren was then appointed manager of the England national team. He won nine of his 18 games in charge of the Three Lions, but was ultimately sacked following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

He later returned to management again in 2008, taking the reigns at Dutch side FC Twente. He enjoyed a successful spell in charge of the club, guiding them to their first ever Eredivisie title in his second season.

He departed Twente in the summer of 2010, taking charge of German side Wolfsburg. He was sacked after winning just seven times in 24 matches.

Before his appointment at Derby County in September 2013, McClaren had unsuccessful spells at both Nottingham Forest and FC Twente. He spent almost two years in charge of the Rams, guiding them to a Championship play off final where they were ultimately defeated 1-0 by QPR.

McClaren has also had unsuccessful managerial spells at both Newcastle United and again Derby County, spending less than a year in charge of both clubs.
