Leeds United suffer setback in pursuit of Premier League defender

Leeds United’s pursuit of Swansea City defender Kyle Bartley has suffered a setback, after the Welsh side’s Premier League defeat at home to Southampton made them clear favourites for the drop.

Leeds’ interest in Kyle Bartley is something that has been widely reported in recent weeks, and it was believed that talks would start if and when the Swans made sure of their Premier League safety.

However, relegation to the Sky Bet Championship could see them keep hold of Bartley, as he has already proven he is capable of performing at that level during an excellent loan spell at Elland Road.

It is also unlikely that Swansea City would want to sell any of their players to their division rivals, so relegation could spell the end of Leeds United’s pursuit of Kyle Bartley.

There is still hope yet for the Whites’ supporters, as the Welsh side are not officially relegated yet. They are three points adrift of safety with just one game to play. The Swans need to beat Stoke City in their final game, and hope that Chelsea and Arsenal both beat Huddersfield Town.

If the Terriers pick up a point against either of those sides, then Swansea will need Manchester City to beat Southampton, and hope that there is a nine goal swing in their favour.

Leeds United fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Swansea City can maintain their Premier League status, and it would make it even sweeter for the Yorkshire club if that led to the relegation of Huddersfield Town.
