Top 20 Managers of the EFL – 6th: Paul Hurst (Shrewsbury Town)

Shrewsbury Town head coach Paul Hurst has been voted by you as the 6th best manager in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have found that you think Hurst is the 6th best manager in the Football League. This is the first time he has been on the Top 20 Managers countdown.
This is a theme on this countdown but most predicted that if Shrewsbury were going to any sort of interesting season it’d be because they were fighting against relegation. But despite the number of big teams fighting for promotion with budgets much bigger than Shrewsbury’s, they were towards the top of the league for most of the season.
For most of the year, the Shrews were in the top two of Sky Bet League One and looking like they might get promoted ahead of their rivals. Unfortunately, their form ended up dipping towards the end of the season and they got pipped to the 2nd automatic promotion place by Blackburn Rovers. They were also beaten in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy by Lincoln City. But despite that, finishing 3rd in League One was a huge achievement for a team more used to fighting to stay in the league, never mind getting out of it.
Shrewsbury’s season is not over as they are in the play-offs and are set to face Charlton Athletic in the semi-finals.
