Barnsley part company with Jose Morais

Following Barnsley’s relegation to League One, the Tykes have terminated the contract of manager Jose Morais and his backroom staff.

Barnsley travelled to Derby County on the final day in search of a win which would prolong their Championship status.

However, the Reds succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at Pride Park, and their fate was sealed.

Goals from Jerome, Vydra, Lawrence, and Nugent condemned their visitors to relegation.

George Moncur hit a consolation for the Reds ten minutes from time, but it wasn’t enough to save Morais’ side.

Morais joined the club in February after previous manager Paul Heckingbottom departed to join Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United.

However, since Morais’ arrival at Oakwell, the Portuguese has overseen just three wins in his fifteen games in charge.

There was a clause in Morais’ contract that if relegation did occur, there was an option for the former Real Madrid and Chelsea assistant to leave.

Morais’ assistant coaches Dimas Teixeira and João Cunha have also left the Reds.

In an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, chief executive Gauthier Ganaye said “Today is a sad day, we will discuss later what has gone wrong during the season,

“When you are the head of the organisation you have to take the responsibility, and today I take my part of the responsibility in what’s happening.”

Victory for Barnsley at Derby would have secured their status in the Championship, for one more season at least.

However, they will now be on the search for a new manager to guide them to an instant return after a disappointing campaign.
