Leeds United fans react to class finish as Whites lead

In what has been a disappointing season for Leeds United fans, the bodies on the terraces at Elland Road were looking for something uplifting to round off the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

It is something that the fans deserve, a blistering and bright start over the first nine games or so was frittered away with performances of little polish nor repute. Today’s opponents are QPR in what is a dead rubber of a game that rounds off a campaign better resigned to the history books.

QPR are another side, like hosts Leeds, who are stuck in mid-table and themselves wanting the season to be over for rebuilding to begin. The BBC Radio Leeds commentators, led by the irrepressible Noel Whelan, were dismissive of the threat that the Londoners possessed.

Yet it was the London side who began the better with Leeds United playing something of a muted game. The Whites were on the back foot in the early exchanges, the visitors looking to bring former United player Matt Smith into the game at every opportunity.

However, it was the home side who broke the deadlock on the half hour with Kemar Roofe applying an acrobatic finish from a nodded-on header by Kalvin Phillips.

In fairness Leeds had been threatening up to the point of scoring, with one goalmouth scramble presenting the Whites with three chances to take the lead.

It was a goal that both settled fans nerves and simultaneously raised spirits in the West Yorkshire sunshine of a fine Sunday. These fans were quick to comment on Roofe’s opener.

Leeds United fans raise Roofe as forward hits 14th of the season

The Whites went in 1-0 up at half-time, Kemar Roofe’s fourth goal against QPR this season proving to be the decisive factor splitting the two sides on a barmy Sunday.
