Garry Monk ready for a new era at Birmingham City

For the second time in as many years, Birmingham City fans will have to wait until the final day before their Championship status is confirmed.

It’s a position that new manager Garry Monk has said he never wants to be in again with the Blues.

Birmingham host promotion chasing Fulham at St Andrews on the final day, who are locked in a battle with Cardiff City for the final automatic promotion spot.

Monk’s side are two points above the drop zone but they will still be keen to get a result in front of their home fans to ease any nerves they may have.

Speaking to the club website, Monk said “We can’t afford to be in this position again,

“On Sunday we need to make sure we retain our status in the league and then we take it into a new era, we take it to a situation where we are never in this position again.

“We have to have that mindset and mentality and make sure we do everything we can to get that opportunity – that’s the mentality we have been trying to put in from the start and that’s what I am sure you will see on Sunday.”

Last season, victory on the final day against Bristol City secured the Blues’ Championship status, but Monk is adamant that it won’t come down to the last game again during his time with the club.

“It’s the biggest achievement we can do at this moment in time but hopefully going forward, hopefully securing that, we need to think differently,” He added.

“It is very difficult to do but it’s the reason why I came here and the reason why going forward whoever’s here will have to meet that challenge as well.”

Both teams go into the game with all to play for, and should Birmingham go behind, it will be a nervy afternoon for the Blues faithful.
