Leeds United defender pinpoints season defining moment

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper has highlighted a defeat at Millwall as the moment that Leeds’ season took a turn for the worse, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The defeat came all the way back in September, and was the Whites’ first loss of the campaign, following an impressive unbeaten start.

Following this game, Leeds then lost seven of their next nine games, spiralling quickly down the Sky Bet Championship table.

And Liam Cooper knows why this happened. He said that Millwall’s victory showed other teams in the league how to play against Leeds and exploit their weaknesses.

Talking about the defeat, Cooper said: “We started so well and it hit us really hard. We were bitterly disappointed that we couldn’t turn around, bounce straight back and go on one of those runs again.”

“The Den’s a very hard place to go and I think that was definitely a starting point of what the Championship’s about. Teams, I think, after that game set up a lot differently against us. They did try and bully us and maybe we weren’t used to that. I think we’d definitely be used to that now. We know what the Championship’s about.”

Leeds have suffered an extremely disappointing season, and their form that followed the Millwall defeat was enough to see Thomas Christiansen lose his job in February.

Former Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom took charge, and Cooper is a big fan of the new Leeds United boss.

“He’s a very good coach who gets the players motivated. He tells us if we’re not pulling our weight and he’s been a pleasure to work with but we’ll be judged on results and we’ve not been getting results. We need to turn that around,” he said.
