Former Derby and Southampton boss applies for Ipswich Town job

George Burley has applied for the vacant managerial position at Ipswich Town, according to the Derby Telegraph.

Ipswich are currently on the lookout for a new boss after Mick McCarthy’s dramatic exit from Portman Road last month.

Former Ipswich player Burley has signalled his intent to return to management with the East Anglian club.

In a 12 year playing span with the Tractor Boys, Burley played 394 times, scoring 6 goals goals before moving to Sunderland.

He is no stranger to management to at Portman Road having held the top job between 1994 and 2002.

In that time he guided the club into the Premier League before securing a fifth-place finish and European football.

Burley has revealed that he has officially applied for the job, and if he were successful in his application, Terry Butcher would become his number two.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Burley said “Everyone has kept asking me about it and, after much consideration, I’ve applied,

“I’d have Terry Butcher working with me too. Just like me he’s got the club in his blood, lives in Suffolk, and is desperate to see better times.”

The former right back has been out of the management game since 2012, after leaving Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

“People might say I have been out of the game for a while, but I have lived in Ipswich for the last four years and been at virtually every home game so I understand the current mood and what is required going forwards.” He added.

“I know it is not an easy job. I know there will be financial restraints in a tough league. And I know people might want to see a new face. But I do feel I have all the credentials and that the glove fits.”

Ipswich are a club that needs rejuvenating, and their former boss could bring the good times back to Portman Road.
