Wolves interested in Southampton goalkeeper

Wolverhampton Wanderers are keeping tabs on Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to The Mirror.

Wolves will be playing in the Premier League next season, and it is understood that they are keen to bolster their goalkeeping department in the form of McCarthy.

The goalkeeper is currently battling with Fraser Forster for the number one spot at Saint Mary’s.

Despite Southampton’s poor season, the 28 year old is enjoying a productive season in the South Coast, as he has established himself as Mark Hughes’ first choice since the former Stoke boss arrived.

He has one year left on his current deal with the Saints, but could find himself playing at Molineux next year.

Southampton wont want to lose their goalkeeper, but they may have no choice if the club suffer relegation back to the Championship for the fist time since 2012.

McCarthy could be convinced to move to Wolves if it means he gets to stay in England’s top tier.

He has forced his way into the England squad in the past, and Wolves could provide the perfect platform for a recall to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Wanderers current keeper john Ruddy has been in fine form for Wolves, winning the Championships golden glove with 23 clean sheets.

Ruddy was brought in at the start of this season after his release from Norwich, and he has proved the doubters wrong this campaign.

McCarthy has made 14 appearances in the Premier League this season, as well as featuring heavily in Southampton’s impressive cup run.

He would bring a wealth of Premier League experience to Wolves, and would provide stern competition to John Ruddy.
