It is likely everyone’s dream to be handed the sum of £1 million for doing nothing, that’s just what might happen to Aston VIlla’s Ross McCormack.
When I say ‘Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack’, I am perhaps being a little disingenuous in that he is theirs by name only. The 31-year-old Scot has not featured for the Villans this season after falling out of favour with the club in general, and with Steve Bruce in particular.
After an alleged lax approach to attending training, including reports that he was stuck behind locked electric gates at his home, the former Leeds United and Fulham striker was loaned out to A-League side Melbourne City until the end of January this year.
He’s since returned to Villa Park, having scored 14 goals in 17 appearances for the Australian side, but has not featured for Villa since arriving back on these shores. However, as the tweet below shows, McCormack could be in for a big windfall should the Midland side gain promotion back to the Premier League.
Understand #avfc striker Ross McCormack stands to make an extra £1m if Villa are promoted, even though he hasn’t played a single Championship game this season. Contractual obligations mean his annual basic salary of around £2.3m would be boosted by just under £1m.

Whilst it seems ludicrous that a player with no league appearances for a side will receive a near £1 million windfall for his sides promotion, that appears to be the case with McCormack.
The Birmingham Mail report that whilst the £12 million buy from Fulham “can now be seen around the club’s training ground,” that is as far as his involvement with the club stretches. For them McCormack is a persona non grata at Villa Park and “has no future under Bruce.”
