A summer of worry ahead for Peterborough United?

Another season, and more disappointment for Peterborough United.

The Cambridgeshire based club have yet again missed out on the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs, despite automatic promotion being chairman Darragh MacAnthony’s target.

This means another season in League One, and following the appointment of Steve Evans back in March, it seems a full season under the Scottish manager.

Grant McCann was sacked back in February, and as a club legend, it was sad to see him leave. He’d captained us to Play-Off success back in 2011, but he was not quite ready as a manager.

Peterborough fans called for his head, but his sacking is proof that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Steve Evans came in, and gave Posh fans some hope, winning his first few games, but since then it has been dreadful.

Saturday’s victory over Fleetwood ended an awful run of four defeats in a row, which put to bed their Play-Off hopes, and meant that they will have to say goodbye to star players Jack Marriott and Marcus Maddison this summer.

The pair attracted a lot of attention back in January, but MacAnthony stuck by his word and kept hold of them in a bid to achieve promotion.

Now, he has got to be realistic. Both players are more than good enough to be in the second tier, and Posh fans have resigned themselves to the fact that they will be losing them.

So what lies ahead for Peterborough? Losing their best two talents isn’t going to be easy, but can they trust Steve Evans to bring in players of a good enough calibre?

If his track record is anything to go by, no. During his tenure at Mansfield he signed Lee Angol and Ricky Miller, both of whom had disappointed during their times at Posh.

It remains to be seen what type of players Steve Evans will go after this summer, but it’s certainly something that is playing on the mind of every Posh fan heading into the summer break.
