Former Blades captain feels Middlesbrough striker would be perfect fit

Speaking to Sheffield Live TV, former Sheffield United skipper David Holdsworth believes that the Blades are calling out for a striker like Middlesbrough’s Britt Assombalonga.

Middlesbrough signed Assombalonga for £15 million in the Summer, and he has gone on to score 15 goals this campaign. Holdsworth feels that although United striker Leon Clarke has three more goals than the Congolese, the Blades need to add more speed to their attack.

He said, “I’m going to say, it doesn’t matter where you add, add pace – add pace up top. We’ve got an abundance of midfield players and we’re decent in that area. I would just like to see us have that electrifying pace.”

Assombalonga fits this mould, a quick striker with a brilliant eye for goal, and Holdsworth thinks the forward would be a perfect match.

“So if I was going to make an addition up top, I’d like a Britt Assombalonga”, he said.

But the former-captain knows that even if Middlesbrough were to allow the forward to depart from Teesside, that he may be out of United’s price range. If Boro were to sell, they would presumably be looking to recuperate the majority, if not in excess of, the £15 million they forked out to Nottingham Forest at the start of the season.

“But you’re going to be asking money – too much”, said Holdsworth. “He’s well out of our budget at present, but that’s the type of profile I would bring in.”

Sheffield United missed out on the Play-Offs this season, but could finish as high as eighth if they win on Sunday away to Bristol City.
