Possible outcomes for the Sky Bet Championship final day

It’s been a long season, but it finally comes to a close this weekend as all 24 teams play their final game in the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

And whilst Wolves have already won the league, and Sunderland have already been relegated to the third tier, there are still plenty more twists and turns to be had this weekend.

When it comes to automatic promotion, Cardiff City are in the driving seat, with a point lead over Fulham. The Bluebirds host relegation threatened Reading, whilst Fulham travel to Birmingham City, a team who are also threatened with the drop. Cardiff know that a victory over Reading will be enough to see them return to the Premier League, whilst Fulham will need to better the Welsh side’s result to achieve promotion from the Sky Bet Championship.

Whichever team fails to go up automatically will finish in third place in the table, whilst Aston Villa are guaranteed fourth place. Following last weekend’s victory over Millwall, Middlesbrough are guaranteed of a Play-Off place, and need just a point to guarantee fifth place.

The final Play-Off spot is all to play for, but it is Derby County who are currently in pole position. With a superior goal difference, a point against Barnsley should be enough to guarantee their place in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs. Failing that, Preston North End and Millwall could both sneak in, although Millwall will need a big goal swing in their favour.

As previously mentioned, Sunderland are already down, but the final two relegation places will be taken by two of five teams. Bolton Wanderers are currently 23rd, and on 40 points, whilst Burton Albion in 22nd and Barnsley in 21st are on 41 points. The two other teams in the final day battle are Birmingham City and Reading, who are on 43 points. Bolton host Nottingham Forest, who have nothing to play for, whilst Burton and Barnsley both face Play-Off chasing teams in the form of Preston and Derby respectively. Outsiders for the drop, Birmingham and Reading, have Fulham and Cardiff respectively.
