Fulham owner in talks over the sale of Wembley stadium

Esteemed members of the FA are considering a bid from Fulham owner Shahid Khan over the sale of Wembley Stadium.

Khan, who currently owns Fulham, has put in a reported bid of around £500m for the national stadium.

He also owns the NFL franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars .

If Khan’s deal was to be accepted, Wembley would still host the FA Cup final, a number of other key domestic football matches – most likely the FA Cup Semi Finals, and most England home fixtures.

It would also open the door for a NFL franchise to play out of London.

However, if Khan did gain control of Wembley Stadium, then the National side would have to play a number of games on the road when the NFL season takes place (September to December)

Khan’s bid is thought to be at least £300m less than what it cost the FA to build Wembley in 2007. However, due to clauses and terms of the offer that has bee put forward,  the FA would make up that shortfall by retaining revenue from corporate hospitality amounting to £30m-£40m per year.

Speaking about the deal, the American said “The Football Association would be able to focus on its core mission of developing players with the best player developers and facilities anywhere in the game,”

““I trust many, if not most of you, are also supporters of the England national teams, so I hope you welcome the potential of this becoming a reality. Always know Wembley would be home to the England national teams, and that we would strive every day of the year to be the best possible steward for a venue that is iconic and beloved here and throughout the world.”

If a deal was to be agreed, it could allow the money to be spent on FA funding of grassroots football, and could see the birth of a London NFL franchise.
