Sunderland manager unsure of future after relegation

Sunderland boss Chris Coleman is unsure on whether he will be in charge of the Black Cats next season after their relegation on Saturday.

A second successive relegation was confirmed on Saturday after a last minute 2-1 defeat to fellow relegation rivals Burton Albion.

Coleman decided to take over the reigns at the Stadium of Light after his tenure as Wales boss ended. However, the Welshman has been unable to turn Sunderland’s fortunes around, and he admits he isn’t sure of the owners (Ellis Short) plans for next season.

Speaking to BBC Newcastle, he said “I can’t say we’ve been relegated and this is my plan, because we don’t know what the chairman is doing.

“I know what needs to be done and I hope I get the chance to do it.”

It has been a horrid season for Sunderland fans who have enjoyed little joy over the course of the campaign. Black Cats fans have seen a managerial change, and have see their side pick up only wins.

Coleman has only managed to oversee five wins during his time in the North East, and the manager admits that he made some mistakes, which he failed to rectify.

“Whatever was needed I never brought it,” he added. “Over 46 games we’ve not been good enough. We had a lot of games to get it right.” He said.

“I feel helplessness, really. As tough as it’s been I thought and believed we could get out of it. It’s more towards anger, frustration and just sadness that now there’s nothing we can do about it. In my managerial career this is as bad as it’s been.”

Sunderland will be hoping for an instant return to the Championship, and Coleman will be hoping he can remain in charge during their League One campaign.
