Short odds for Sunderland to win Sky Bet League One next season

Relegated Sky Bet Championship club Sunderland have been listed with short odds to immediately bounce back up to the second tier by winning Sky Bet League One next season according to the latest odds from English Football League sponsors Sky Bet.

The Black Cats’ 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Burton Albion on Wearside on Saturday resulted in the club suffering a second consecutive relegation following their disappointing drop from the English Premier League last term.

Lack of investment has played the biggest part in Sunderland’s fall from grace and fans continue to hope for a new owner to come through the doors at The Stadium of Light while the club have developed a losing mentality on the pitch, particularly at home, which they simply cannot shake off.

In recent days, much has been made of Sunderland’s Sky Bet League One fixtures with little Accrington Stanley next season, the Lancashire club have been one of the nation’s biggest jokes after the club were mentioned in a famous milk advert some years ago. Stanley can enjoy their well-deserved jaunt in the third tier of course, while Sunderland must undergo a huge rebuilding job in the summer as they look to plot a way back to the Sky Bet Championship.

Sunderland are arguably the biggest club to drop to the third tier in recent years, however, they are not the first former top flight club to fall into Sky Bet League One. The likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City and Wigan Athletic have all sunk to that level of football in recent years but have masterminded a way back out.

The sheer size of Sunderland AFC should still attract players capable of winning Sky Bet League One and English Football League sponsors Sky Bet have the Wearsiders priced at just 11/2 to win the division in 2018/2019.

Much will depend on just how much business the club can conduct over the summer on a tight playing budget but regardless of their off-field financial and ownership woes, Sunderland should have enough resources to rebuild just as Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers have done this season. The latter’s achievements in particular show that the task awaiting The Black Cats can be done.
