Villa, Spurs chasing Aston Villa loan man

Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Sam Johnstone in the summer as back up to Hugo Lloris, according to The Sun.

Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm is currently Mauricio Pochettino’s number two choice, but Spurs may be forced too look elsewhere if Vorm decides to pursue a move to guarantee first team football. The 34 year old is out of contract in the summer and could leave the club on a free transfer. Vorm has been at Spurs for four seasons, but has only started 11 games in the league under Pochettino.

Johnstone has been ever present between the sticks at Villa Park this season, and has put in a string of impressive performances that have been catching the eye of a number of Premier League clubs. The Manchester United goalkeeper is now 25 years old and Aston Villa is, incredibly, his seventh loan club during his time at Old Trafford.

Johnstone is out of contract at Manchester United in the summer, and will be eligible to leave Old Trafford on a free. It is understood that Steve Bruce is keen to extend his stay in the Midlands, but Premier League football with the Villans is not guaranteed, and the shot stopper may fancy his chances in England’s top flight.

The Villa loan man joined last season during the January transfer window to replace Pierluigi Gollini. After impressing in the second half of the campaign, and keeping more clean sheets than any other keeper during his time in the Championship, he returned to Villa Park on a year long loan deal last summer.

In 43 games this season, the goalkeeper has kept 19 clean sheets, and would be welcomed back to Villa Park with open arms, if he opts to return. However, the incentive of Premier League football, with a club like Spurs, could be too hard to turn down for Johnstone.
