How these two Championship clubs can be relegated this weekend

Sunderland and Burton Albion both face the dreaded drop this weekend, and the pair lock horns at the Stadium of Light tomorrow. Here is how the sides could face relegation on Saturday.

It’s been a hugely disappointing for Sunderland fans after coming down from the Premier League last season. The Black Cats are propping the rest of the league up at the bottom of the table, and their fate could be sealed if they taste defeat on home soil.

For Sunderland to be relegated on Saturday, they would have to lose to Burton, and two of Bolton, Birmingham City (40 points) or Barnsley (38 points) would have to reach 41 points. The Wearside club would need Barnsley to fail in achieving maximum points against Leeds, Sheffield United to beat Birmingham at St Andrews, and Wolves to beat Bolton at The Macron.

Burton did superbly well to stave off relegation last season, but it appears that this season could be the year they return to League One. The Brewers have earned their place in the Championship, and for a club of their size and stature, they have given a really good account of themselves in the second tier.

If Burton lose tomorrow, both Bolton and Birmingham would have to win to send the Brewers down. If Clough’s men fail to get a result in the North East, Burton fans will be hopeful that Wolves and Sheffield United can do them a favour, and prolong their stay in the Championship for another week at least.

If it is a draw at the Stadium of Light, then both sides may live to fight another day, unless Bolton and Birmingham claim three points.

It is a crucial game at the bottom of the table tomorrow, and with both sides facing relegation, it is sure to be a pulsating encounter in Wearside.
