Southampton defender open to Fulham switch in the summer

Southampton defender Matt Targett would be open to a return to Fulham next season, according to Get West London.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at the Championship side and has impressed since joining them in January. He said returning to them in the summer is an “option” for him and has not ruled it out.

Targett has played 15 times for Fulham since his loan move and has scored once. He has been a key player for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side who have steam rolled their way up the Championship table and into promotion contention.

It will be interesting to see what happens if Fulham get promoted to the Premier League and Southampton get relegated to the Championship. This could have major implications for Targett’s future.

He had fallen out of favour at Southampton and could not get into the team past their first choice left-back Ryan Bertrand. Therefore, the Saints were keen in January on letting him leave to gain some more first-team experience.

Targett started his career at Southampton having joined them at the age of eight. He made his first-team debut in August 2014 in a League Cup tie against Millwall. He his tipped for a big future at Southampton and signed a new five-year deal in August 2017 until 2022.

He has not ruled to Fulham in the summer and it will be interesting to see what happens with him.
