Newcastle United are interested in Sunderland’s Josh Maja and Joel Asoro, according to The Sun.
It is believed that the Black Cats are keen on signing them both on longer contracts but with relegation to League One looming, both of these players may have their minds set on leaving.
It would be a huge blow for Sunderland for two of their most promising players to join a bitter rival. However, Newcastle will have to face competition from Arsenal and Watford to sign Joel Asoro in the summer.
Asoro, who is 18-years-old, has established himself in Sunderland’s first-team in what has been a terrible season for the Black Cats. He has scored 2 goals in 22 appearances and has become a regular for Sweden under-21s. He is being tipped for a big future in the game and is one who Sunderland want to keep for next season.
His fellow striker Josh Maja is another who Newcastle are said to have an eye on as well. The 19-year-old has also been used a lot by Sunderland this season and has shown signs of promise. He joined Sunderland in 2015 from Fulham.
Newcastle United look to have secured their Premier League status for another season and will already be looking at potential targets for the summer in preparation for the next campaign. They will be thinking of the future by looking at Asoro and Maja, but this would certainly rub salt in the wounds of Sunderland.
