Adkins highlights missed opportunity after his side crash to Wednesday defeat

Hull City manager Nigel Adkins believes that his side’s 1-0 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday was an opportunity missed to continue their recent momentum.

The Tigers went into the match unbeaten in four Sky Bet Championship matches but were undone by Jordan Rhodes’ first half header for The Owls.

Speaking to The72 after the match, Adkins said that while his side dominated the game, the performance was below par considering recent results.

“The stadium was very quiet” Adkins said. “The first 15 minutes was like a basketball game, very end-to-end and it was far too open.

“They scored and it was a poor goal to concede from our point of view, we shouldn’t allow the cross in the first place and when we do, it’s far too easy for Rhodes.

“For the next hour-and-a-quarter they have five across their box and four in front of that and it’s up to us to break them down.

“We’ve dominated the game but without really testing the goalkeeper and we huffed and puffed.”

Hull City were denied an injury time equaliser with either Abel Hernandez or Jarrod Bowen thought to be offside and Adkins admitted that the decision was tough on his side.

“We score a goal, the referee gives the goal and the linesman runs to the halfway line” said The Tigers boss.

“We are celebrating the goal and one of their players asks the referee to go and speak to the linesman.

“They’ve had a conversation and disallowed the goal for offside.

“It’s a very, very close decision but it was given and we lost the game.”

After picking up eight points from an available 12, the result against The Owls was really disappointing for manager Adkins and he believes that it has disrupted the momentum which has been built at the club in recent weeks.

Adkins added “We will debrief and reflect on the performance, I want to have momentum in the final three games because that’s been disrupted today.

“I am very angry that we had a good opportunity and we have conceded a poor goal which we should have defended better in respect of the ball coming into the box.

“We had enough ball to build the play and get into the attacking third of the pitch, I’m talking about being better in the attacking third.”

Hull City are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City.
