REPORT: Hull City 0 Sheffield Wednesday 1

Sheffield Wednesday have returned to winning ways in the Sky Bet Championship with a 1-0 win over Hull City at The KCOM Stadium.

Jordan Rhodes got the all important goal in the first half as The Owls put on a solid display for their large travelling support.

A lively start to the match saw Rhodes’ sharp header force a smart save from home keeper Allan McGregor before Max Clark’s ambitious long range drive at the other end was palmed to safety by Wednesday’s Joe Wildsmith.

A goal looked to be on its way and in the 18th minute it arrived when Rhodes headed in a cross after being left unmarked in the box.

Adam Reach was unlucky not to make it 2-0 eight minutes later when his shot bounced the wrong side of the far post while Abel Hernandez was denied an equaliser by some last-ditch defending on the stroke of half time as Sheffield Wednesday maintained their one-goal advantage going into the break.

The second half failed to produce much excitement and goalscoring chances were few and far between as both sides struggled to carve out attacking opportunities.

Jon Toral’s vicious strike fell into the arms of Wildsmith early in the half while Seb Larsson’s speculative effort 20 minutes from time was closer to the back of the stand than the back of the net. Hernandez then looped a shot over before Angus MacDonald and Michael Hector both headed shots off target as The Tigers struggled to break down their opponents’ well-organised defence.

Wednesday could have made it 2-0 late on but they were unable to capitalise on a defensive error from the home side.

The Owls were left with hearts in mouths in the first minute of injury time when Hernandez slid the ball into the net from Harry Wilson’s cross but the referee disallowed the goal for offside after consulting his linesman. Hernandez then saw a shot superbly saved by Wildsmith before MacDonald headed wide with the goal at his mercy as the visitors hung on for the three points.
