Former Derby County loanee Omar Mascarell has been re-signed by Real Madrid, according to Spanish media news Marca.

The 25-year-old midfielder spent time on loan at Championship side Derby County in the 2014/15 season. He played 23 times for the Rams.

There were a few eyebrows raised to the news in 2014 that Derby had signed a midfielder on loan from La Liga giants Real Madrid and his move to England was eagerly anticipated.

Omar Mascarell joined Real Madrid at the age of 17 having previously played for his local sides such as Santa Cruz and Laguna. He soon became a regular for Real Madrid’s C and B teams in his first couple of years at the Bernabeu.

He made his debut for the first-team in June 2013 in a league game against Osasuna and came on a substitute to replace Mesut Ozil. He then joined Derby on loan in August 2014 after struggling to break into Real Madrid’s first-team.

After returning from Derby, Real Madrid sent him on loan to fellow Spanish side Sporting Gijon for the 2015/16 and he helped them stay up in La Liga in his only season at the club. He then left the Bernabeu on a permanent basis to sign for Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt in July 2016.

Real Madrid did install a buy-back in his contract at Frankfurt which means they can sign him back for £3.5 million. They have now activated this and Mascarell looks set for a return to Spain.
